Two very different chemistries share one family name, and buyers who confuse them usually pay for the wrong one. At the large end sits the polymer: deoxyribonucleic acid drawn from fish milt, where nature concentrates it more densely than almost anywhere else in biology — salmon testis cells carry DNA at more than 60 per cent of their dry weight, which is why a side stream the filleting plant barely values becomes the cheapest gram of laboratory-grade DNA on the market. At the small end sit the 5'-nucleotides and their degradation ladder, the compounds that decide whether a seafood extract tastes flat or full and that double as the chemical clock ticking inside every landed fish.
Eata Marisource supplies both ends of that spectrum. High-molecular-weight sodium DNA, cut or intact, comes from salmon and other cold-water milt streams; individual nucleotides and nucleosides come from hydrolysed RNA and from freshness-relevant reference standards. Every lot ships with the absorption ratios, molecular-weight data and purity figures that make the material usable rather than merely purchasable.
The Polymer: DNA From the Milt Stream
Fish milt is almost embarrassingly pure starting material. The cells are simple, protein and RNA contamination runs low, and the extraction needs no exotic chemistry — lysis, deproteinisation, alcohol precipitation. What emerges is a high-molecular-weight double-stranded DNA with an A260/A280 ratio near 1.8, a GC content of roughly 41 per cent, and fragment distributions that can be supplied from tens of kilobases down to sheared preparations of a few hundred base pairs. The sodium salt handles as a white fibrous solid, dissolves readily, and stays stable for months in solution at refrigeration temperatures or for years as a lyophilised powder.

The Small Molecules: A Nucleotide Ladder With a Built-In Clock
The moment a fish dies, its muscle starts dismantling ATP in a fixed sequence — ATP to ADP, ADP to AMP, AMP to inosine 5'-monophosphate (IMP), IMP on to inosine, and inosine on to hypoxanthine. That sequence is more than biochemistry; it is the freshness index K used across the seafood industry, where the sum of inosine and hypoxanthine as a share of all ATP-related compounds separates exceptional material (K under 20 per cent, the sashimi benchmark) from rejected lots (above 60 per cent). It is also the reason IMP matters commercially: it is the nucleotide largely responsible for the characteristic taste of genuinely fresh fish, while hypoxanthine drags the same fish toward bitterness as it ages.
- Umami multiplication synergy with glutamate is the economic engine of the whole family: a blend of 98 per cent monosodium glutamate with just 2 per cent disodium 5'-ribonucleotide (an equal IMP–GMP mix) delivers roughly four times the flavour-enhancing power of the glutamate alone.
- Which salts we stock disodium inosinate and disodium guanylate, individually or as a 1:1 blend, are the workhorse pair in seasoning systems; 5'-AMP, 5'-CMP, 5'-UMP and the corresponding nucleosides cover the research side.
- Reference compounds for freshness work, we supply nucleotide reference standards and can provide HPLC profiles of ATP-related compounds in marine extracts, giving laboratories a traceable ladder to calibrate against.

Purity You Can Check at 260 nm
Nucleic acids are among the few raw materials a buyer can audit with a spectrophotometer in ten minutes, and our documentation is written to survive that audit. Absorption ratios are reported for every DNA lot (A260/A280, and A260/A230 where relevant), concentration follows the standard 40 μg/mL per absorbance unit at 260 nm, and molecular-weight distributions are evidenced by agarose electrophoresis. For nucleotides, HPLC purity and identity by retention time against reference standards come as standard; water content, heavy metals and microbiology complete the panel.
HPLC with UV detection resolves the individual nucleotides in a profile lot.
Where These Materials Go
- molecular biology: hybridisation blocking in Northern, Southern and in situ workflows, where sheared salmon DNA remains the default competitor.
- cosmetic and dermal research built around polynucleotide fractions in the 50-1,500 kDa window and their film-forming, moisture-binding behaviour.
- flavour systems and savoury formulation development using IMP, GMP and their sodium salts as taste potentiators.
- freshness and quality research: K-value calibration, biosensor development and seafood storage studies.
- fermentation and cell-culture work where nucleotides serve as defined nitrogen and growth-supporting components.

Custom Preparation
Fragment length, salt form, concentration and format are all adjustable: a milt-DNA lot can be supplied intact, mechanically sheared to a target range, or partially depolymerised; nucleotides can be blended to a stated IMP:GMP ratio or supplied singly; lyophilised, frozen or in solution. If your protocol specifies a published starting material — salmon testis DNA, a defined nucleotide mixture, a particular absorption ratio — we will build the specification around it and hold it over repeat lots. Blends with other marine ingredients from our range are available for formulation studies.
