Marine Natural Products & Bioactives

A single gram of dried seaweed or sponge biomass can carry chemistry that synthetic routes struggle to copy. Xanthophylls tuned to the exact wavelength bands of coastal light, polyphenols built from phloroglucinol units, triterpene glycosides that no land plant produces — these molecules are the reason marine extracts keep appearing in screening libraries, cosmetic formulation labs, cell-culture media development and analytical reference work. Eata Marisource was built around sourcing that chemistry: we collect, extract and refine bioactive fractions from algae, microalgae, invertebrates and seawater itself, then supply them in research- and production-ready formats.

What follows is a working map of our range. Each family below is stocked in standard specifications and can be tuned — solvent system, purity cut-off, carrier, mesh size — to whatever your process demands. If you need a fraction we do not yet list, that is a conversation we enjoy having, not a dead end.

A. Eleven Families, One Supply Chain

Our portfolio is organised around the molecule classes that marine biomass actually delivers, rather than around raw material species. That structure keeps sourcing flexible — the same fucoxanthin specification can be met from several brown-algae supply streams — while the chemistry you order stays constant.

B. Carotenoid Cornerstones: Astaxanthin and Fucoxanthin

Astaxanthin is where marine pigment chemistry earns its reputation. In Haematococcus pluvialis, the compound accumulates as esterified astaxanthin inside thick-walled cyst cells — reported at roughly 1.5–3% of cyst dry weight in commercial literature — and that natural esterified form is precisely what discerning formulators ask for. We supply the corresponding oleoresin, oil dispersions and free-flowing beadlets, each with carotenoid profile data from HPLC.

Fucoxanthin tells a different story. It is the most abundant brown-algae xanthophyll, responsible for the olive-brown cast of Saccharina and Undaria fronds, and published surveys place typical content in the range of a fraction of a milligram to a few milligrams per gram of dry biomass depending on species, season and extraction route. Because fucoxanthin is lipophilic and oxidation-sensitive, we ship it under nitrogen in amber packaging and quote peroxide values alongside potency — details that save formulators months of guesswork.

C. Phycobiliproteins: Fluorescence-Grade Colour

Few natural products are as immediately recognisable under the right light. R-phycoerythrin absorbs strongly around 565 nm and emits near 578 nm; C-phycocyanin absorbs near 620 nm and emits around 647 nm. These pigment–protein complexes are workhorses in flow cytometry, immunoassay development, microscopy probes and food-grade colour research, and their value collapses if the chromophore denatures — which is why our phycobiliproteins are extracted, purified and stored in cold-chain conditions and supplied with absorbance-ratio data (A565/A280 and A620/A280) on every batch.

Beyond R-phycoerythrin and C-phycocyanin, we can supply allophycocyanin and mixed phycobilisome fractions on request. Purity grades span technical enrichment for colour applications through to fluorescence grade for reagent development — tell us which end of the spectrum your work sits on and we will match the specification.

D. Marine Polyphenols and the Wider Pigment Bench

Brown seaweeds polymerise phloroglucinol into phlorotannins — a family of polyphenols with no terrestrial equivalent at comparable scale. Reported total phenolic contents reach double-digit percentages of dry weight in genera such as Fucus and Ascophyllum, and the fraction is sought for antioxidant screening, anti-browning systems, preservative-challenge studies and cosmetics research. Our polyphenol extracts are standardised against the Folin–Ciocalteu assay, with phlorotannin enrichment available from roughly 10% up to 70% total phenolics.

The same bench covers our other marine pigments: chlorophyll derivatives for colour and photosynthesis-related research, carotene fractions, and specialty colour cuts where a customer needs a hue our named families do not describe. If your specification reads like a chromatogram rather than a product name, send it over as-is.

E. Saponins, Glycosides and Sterols

Sea cucumber body wall is the commercial home of holothurin-type triterpene glycosides — saponins with strong surface activity and a long history in biological screening. Starfish add their own steroidal glycoside chemistry. We supply these as enriched powders and graded fractions, with batch documentation built for industrial screening work.

On the sterol side, fucosterol dominates the sterol fraction of many brown algae — frequently reported above 70% of total sterols — while brassicasterol marks the red-algae stream and cholesterol the invertebrate one. All three are stocked as high-purity powders for reference work, formulation bases and intermediate synthesis.

F. Terpenoids and Alkaloids from Invertebrate Biomass

Sponges, tunicates and soft corals are the most chemically inventive organisms in the ocean — the marine pharmacology literature credits them with a disproportionate share of all reported marine natural product structures. Accessing that chemistry responsibly means working with cultivated, by-catch-free or aquacultured biomass, and that is the only biomass we touch.

From this stream we offer enriched meroterpenoid, diterpene and triterpene fractions, alongside indole- and brominated-alkaloid fractions typically supplied in research quantities. Every lot is backed by source documentation: species, harvest region and processing route. For screening groups, we can also build custom fraction libraries — a plate of forty marine fractions is often more productive than forty isolated guesses.

G. Deep Ocean Water and Seawater Concentrates

Drawn from intakes below roughly 200 metres — beneath the sunlit, seasonally variable layer — deep ocean water arrives cold, clean and consistently mineralised. Magnesium sits near 1,200 mg/L with calcium, potassium and a full trace-mineral accompaniment in stable proportions, which is why mineral-focused research groups and industrial fermentation teams alike use these brines as mineral sources.

Our processing chain filters, concentrates and, where required, spray-dries these waters into bitterns, liquid concentrates and mineral salt powders. Desalination brine streams add a further sustainable source. Concentration factor, mineral ratio and microbiological status are all adjustable — one customer's fermentation medium supplement is another's topical-formulation water phase, and the same feed water serves both.

H. Cold Chains and Gentle Downstream Work

Carotenoids oxidise, phycobiliproteins denature, polyphenols polymerise. Every step of our downstream work is chosen to keep those failure modes quiet: low-temperature extraction, oxygen-excluded handling, freeze drying as the default dehydration step for heat-labile fractions, and amber or nitrogen-flushed packaging as standard.

The practical difference shows up on the certificate of analysis. A fucoxanthin extract dried at gentle vacuum holds its absorbance spectrum months longer than a heat-dried equivalent; a phycobiliprotein lyophilised under optimised cycle conditions reconstitutes with almost no fluorescence loss. We treat those numbers as the product itself, not as fine print.

I. Fractionation Prowess and Batch Analytics

Standardised actives require real separation capability. Our laboratories run preparative chromatography for purified singles, adsorption and ion-exchange steps for enrichment, and membrane and chromatographic polishing for the last impurity points. Whether the target is a 95% fucosterol powder or a fluorescence-grade phycobiliprotein, the same fractionation logic applies.

J. Built to Your Specification

Standard SKUs cover most enquiries; the rest is where our development team earns its keep. We routinely take on custom potency targets, alternative carriers and solvents, specific particle-size distributions, proprietary blends of two or more families, and small-batch fractions built around a customer's own bioassay feedback. Prototype quantities move fast once a specification is agreed, and every custom lot is documented to the same analytical depth as the catalogue range.

If your project involves marine chemistry that does not appear on this page, describe it in your own words. The odds are good that we have handled the biomass, the molecule class, or something close enough to shorten your path.
