Marine Carbohydrates & Hydrocolloids

Ask any formulator what a seaweed gum actually costs and the honest answer is: very little per kilogram of finished product. Inclusion levels sit below one percent, yet that small fraction decides whether a suspension stays up, a gel cuts cleanly, a capsule dissolves on cue or an encapsulated cell survives freezing. That leverage is why we treat hydrocolloids as engineered inputs rather than commodities — the difference between two sodium alginates with identical assays can be a gel that holds for months and one that weeps within a week.

Seaweed does not hand over its sugars in a standard form. Cold-water kelps lay down guluronic-rich alginate for stiffness; wrack species weave in more of the softer mannuronic blocks; red weeds tune their galactan sulfation to the season and the current. Each family of marine carbohydrate — the alginates, the agars and agaroses, the carrageenans, the fucoidans and their relatives, the simple mono- and oligosaccharides, and chondroitin sulfate drawn from marine cartilage — carries its own structure–behaviour map. Our job is to read that map for you, supply the grade that fits, and document it in numbers you can defend.

Alginates: Chosen by Block Structure, Not Just Viscosity

Any supplier can quote a viscosity. Far fewer can tell you what sits behind it. Alginate chains are built from guluronic (G) and mannuronic (M) acid blocks, and the M/G ratio decides nearly everything downstream: G-rich grades crosslink into stiff, brittle, dimensionally stable gels; M-rich grades give soft, elastic matrices that hold delicate payloads. We stock and source across the spectrum, and every alginate lot ships with its measured viscosity at the concentration you will actually use.

  • Sodium alginate — viscosity windows from roughly 10 to beyond 10,000 mPa·s, particle size cut to order, suitable for bead-making, 3D printing inks and encapsulation studies.
  • Potassium and calcium alginate — for systems where sodium load or in-situ gelation matters.
  • Alginic acid — the free-acid form, for chelation work and controlled conversion.
  • Propylene glycol alginate — acid-stable modifier for acidic systems and fine suspensions.
  • M/G specification available on request, confirmed by NMR against published methods.

Agar & Agarose: One Extract, Two Very Different Jobs

Agar is the everyday workhorse — culture media, plant tissue culture, dental impression and bakery gels — and is graded above all on gel strength, typically quoted from 700 up to 1,200 g/cm² and beyond. Agarose is agar stripped down to its neutral fraction, where the specification vocabulary changes entirely: electroendosmosis (EEO), gelling and melting temperature, and sulfate residue. A molecular-biology grade agarose gels near 36 °C, melts near 88 °C, resolves DNA cleanly and leaves nothing behind to interfere with enzymes.

Parameter Agar (culture grade) Agarose (electrophoresis grade)
Gel strength 700–1,200+ g/cm² (1.5%) >1,000 g/cm² (1%)
Gelling temperature 34–38 °C 34.5–37.5 °C (1.5%)
Melting temperature 75–85 °C 86.5–89.5 °C (1.5%)
EEO (-mr) Not applicable Low (<0.10) to medium (0.16–0.19)
Sulfate residue Application dependent ≤0.20%
Typical formats Powder, strips, instant Fine powder, low-melt variants
  • Specialty agarose options: low-melt for in-gel work, high-strength for pulsed-field gels, and low-EEO grades for protocols where analyte recovery is critical.

Carrageenans: Three Types, Three Personalities

The carrageenan family earns its reputation on how differently the kappa, iota and lambda forms behave in the same formulation — sometimes in the same formulation at once. Kappa pairs with potassium into firm, brittle gels that synergise with locust bean gum; iota needs calcium and answers with soft, elastic, freeze–thaw stable gels; lambda never gels at all and simply carries suspension. Refined and semi-refined grades are both available, and blends are a normal request rather than an exception.

Type Gelling ion Gel character Signature uses
Kappa (κ) Potassium Firm, brittle, may synerese Dairy gels, pet-food and water-binding systems, air-freshener gels
Iota (ι) Calcium Soft, elastic, freeze–thaw stable Suspensions, cold-fill sauces, thixotropic inks
Lambda (λ) None (thickens) Non-gelling viscosity Milk thickening, stabiliser blends
  • Refined (E407) and semi-refined (E407a) carrageenan, plus kappa–iota and kappa–LBG blends to hit a texture you already have in mind.

Fuoidan & Other Seaweed Polysaccharides

Sulfated polysaccharides are the reason seaweed keeps appearing in cell-signalling literature. Fucoidan leads the family, but laminarin, ulvan, porphyran and the phlorotannin-rich fractions all have their own followings. Because source species, harvest season and extraction route each shift molecular weight and sulfation — the two numbers that govern activity — we supply these materials with both measured, not assumed, and offer molecular-weight windows rather than single values where your work needs them.

  • Fucoidan from Fucus vesiculosus, Undaria pinnatifida and Laminaria/Saccharina sources, with sulfate content and molecular-weight distribution on the certificate.
  • Laminarin (β-1,3-glucan) — a regular request for plant-defence elicitation and immunology research.
  • Ulvan from Ulva — sulfated rhamnose-rich chemistry for biomaterials and wound-model studies.
  • Fucoidan-rich crude fractions for teams who want native complexity rather than a refined single polymer.

Marine Monosaccharides & Oligosaccharides

Break the polymers down and a second catalogue appears: L-fucose, D-mannose, D-galactose, rhamnose and glucuronic acid, followed by the oligosaccharides prepared by controlled depolymerisation — alginate oligosaccharides, agarose- and carrageenan-derived galactans, fucoidan fragments. These are the materials behind glycoscience method development, chromatography standards, prebiotic fermentation trials and cosmeceutical research. Degree of polymerisation, linkage type and residual salt content are the parameters we record; purity runs upward of 95% on most lines.

Marine Chondroitin Sulfate

Marine-sourced chondroitin sulfate — drawn from fish cartilage and other marine processing streams — offers a consistent sulfation profile that researchers increasingly prefer over mixed land-animal sources. It reaches us as a fine white to off-white powder, assayed by HPLC against reference standards, and leaves us with identity, purity and protein-residue data attached. Scaffolding studies, cartilage-model work and nutraceutical R&D are the usual destinations.

Every Lot, Measured - Not Asserted

Because hydrocolloid performance hides in numbers that a basic assay never captures, our release package goes further than appearance and moisture:

  • Viscosity at your working concentration, not a house default.
  • Gel strength and texture analysis on gelling grades, cast under standard conditions.
  • M/G ratio by NMR for alginates; sulfation and EEO for agarose and carrageenans.
  • Molecular-weight distribution by GPC/SEC where the specification demands it.
  • Heavy metals by ICP-MS, microbial limits, and full traceability to harvest region and processor.

Where These Materials Go to Work

  • Laboratory research — electrophoresis matrices, encapsulated cell culture, hydrogel modelling, glycoscience substrates.
  • Industrial formulation — textile printing pastes, paper sizing, ceramic and weld-rod binders, water-treatment flocculation studies.
  • Bioprocessing — microcarrier development, fermentation media components, downstream-processing aids.
  • Personal-care and cosmetic R&D — rheology modifiers, film-formers, marine-active ingredient studies.

Formats and Packaging

Research quantities ship in glass bottles or amber vials from 25 g upward; production volumes leave in 25 kg fibre drums, kraft bags or lined pouches, with moisture-barrier liners as standard for hygroscopic grades. Hygiene-critical lines can be packed under controlled conditions, and neutral packaging protects your supplier relationships.

Built to Your Specification

Much of what leaves our warehouse was made for one customer first. If the catalogue grade is close but not exact, we will close the gap: viscosity and mesh adjustments on alginates, custom agarose EEO windows, kappa–iota blends tuned to your texture target, molecular-weight cuts on fucoidan, or a mono- and oligosaccharide panel prepared to your DP specification. Send us the specification sheet you wish existed — sourcing, characterisation and documentation are handled from there, and samples are the fastest way to find out whether the grade behaves the way your protocol expects.

Contact us with your target specification, source preference or quantity, and we will come back with the closest matching material and its full characterisation data.
